The Outstanding meme: how to make your own
Updated October 31, 2026
The Outstanding meme is the AI band swap that took over TikTok: anyone can be singing "Outstanding" at the Tiny Desk. Here is how the format works and how to make your own in a few minutes.
What is the Outstanding meme?
It is a 19-second clip from a real 2023 NPR Tiny Desk concert, cut at the final chorus of "Outstanding" by The Gap Band, with the five performers replaced by AI: a lead singer, a saxophonist, a keyboard player and two backing singers. The version that started the trend put that week's losing college football coaches on stage; every version since keeps the same set, the same cuts and the same song.
Wondering where the clip comes from and why everyone is using it? The full story is on the meme origin page. meme origin page.
Anatomy of the video
The meme uses the same four shots every time, which is what makes it so easy to recognize (and to remake):
- Band wide shot
Band wide shot - everyone behind the tiny desk; the two backing spots are the easiest swaps
- Lead laugh
Lead singer close-up - the big laugh; this is the money shot, give it to the funniest face
- Sax solo
Sax solo - the sax player steps forward; a rival or a coach lands well here
- Band finale
Band again - the final chorus with the whole desk singing
Make your own Outstanding meme
With an AI generator like Tiny Desk AI Generator it is three steps:
- 1
Pick your seats - tap anyone on the stage to swap them; leave a seat alone to keep the original coach, or remove a photo to bring the coach back
- 2
Add a photo per seat - one face each, looking at the camera, in good light; groups fit across the five spots
- 3
Make the video - the whole 18-second clip renders in one pass with the song mixed in, plus a silent copy for posting
Read the step-by-step guide for photo tips and what to expect.
Variations to try
- Coaches and players - the classic; swap in whoever lost this week
- Your rival's sideline - their head coach on lead, their quarterback on sax
- Friends and group chats - skip the famous faces, put the whole chat on stage
- Pets - five dogs was the version this site started with; cats work too
Posting it without getting muted
Post it as an obvious parody and keep it personal: no one under 18 in the swaps, nothing passed off as a real performance, and nothing used in ads. The song is not licensed for platforms, so every render also comes with a silent copy - if TikTok or Instagram mutes the audio, post that one and add "Outstanding" from the app's sounds.

Outstanding meme questions
What is the Outstanding meme?
An AI-edited clip of the last 19 seconds of Charlie Wilson's 2023 NPR Tiny Desk performance of "Outstanding", with the band members swapped for whoever the creator wants - coaches, players, friends or pets. The song, the cuts and the set stay the same.
Are the people in the Outstanding meme real?
The performance is real; the swapped faces are not. Every version is an AI edit of Charlie Wilson's band, and none of the swapped-in people performed at NPR.
How do I make my own Outstanding meme?
Use an AI band-swap generator like Tiny Desk AI Generator: tap the seats you want to replace, add one photo per person, and the full clip renders in about 7 to 10 minutes with the song included.
Is it free to make?
No, each video is rendered by a paid AI video model, so there are no free renders. Failed videos refund their credits automatically, and credits never expire.
